System calibration:

Calibration of Nav Systems is a pre-requisite to proper systems performance. Though this may sound like stating the obvious, it is amazing how many systems on boats have never been properly calibrated resulting in making the system and the boat perform much below its possibilities.

Calibration needs to performed in a methodical way but usually only once on a cruising vessel. More modern sophisticated equipment has made this job easier, however the job needs to be done.

Here is general guideline, details need to be checked against the individual’s units manual. Calibration is greatly facilitated by quiet sea state and no current.
